The design of the Doha Hotel developed out of a concept for an iconic conference and hotel development which serves as a regional leader in low energy design. The site occupies a prominent junction bounded by a secondary road and the main arterial route through the Education City development. The self-shading geometry and integration of external shading systems into the design reduced the external shading by over 65%.
With cooling requirements being responsible for the majority of CO2 emissions in this climate the design team proposed extensive measures to reduce heat gain from solar radiation. The Advanced Modelling Group assisted the design team with the 3D model for this project and enabled links to solar analysis software. In addition to the concave entrance geometry, ribbons of terraces extend away from the building form to self-shade the lower floors and provide external space to the hotel guests. A unique shading system was also developed to gradually diminish the density and size of louvers around the façade according to exposure.
