Passive Design

Results of the site and plot analysis (i.e. circulation, orientation and overshadowing) drive the development of massing studies. The evaluation of floor to floor heights, floorplate shape and depth is determined in relation to occupancy patterns, ventilation strategy and daylighting. The location of thermal mass, passive stacks, lightwells, the shape, size and orientation of openings and solar shading contribute to the low-energy operation of buildings.

Bespoke design tools developed by Aedas R&D as well as existing software applications support the evaluation of massing solutions that make the most of climatic and microclimatic opportunities. The benefits of passive design measures are evaluated in terms of their contribution to the overall energy profile of a building. Passive design features are essential and cost-effective contributors to low-carbon operation and can contribute to the architectural expression of a building.
