Aedas was invited to develop a masterplan and concept for the design and redevelopment of the Al Khozama site including a luxury hotel, office tower, and an extension to Al Faisaliah Mall. On the concept design, a triangular shading device protects the façade on the South, East, and West orientations gradually transitioning to vertical fins on the North façade to protect against the low angle sun.

To reduce the scale of the towers and contrast the geometric rigidity of the masterplan, a subtle shift in the focal point of each shading element contributes to the overall presentation of the design whilst maintaining the required depth to shade the façade. The gradient applied to the orientation of the louvers follows several design curves that describe views and local urban conditions. The interactive rig developed for the shading concept allows design flexibility with the embedded constraints ensuring maximum solar shading and visibility.
