Aedas were appointed by ASDA to design a low carbon store in response to Wal-Marts global environmental challenges. The aim was to design and open a viable prototype store that is 25-30 % more efficient and will produce up to 30 % fewer greenhouse gas emissions within the next 4 years.

This store has been built using low carbon and sustainable materials and embraces new M&E and refrigeration technologies. ASDA’s overall aim is to reduce energy and wastage during construction but also, most importantly, to reduce energy consumption during the store’s operation. The store’s operation will be monitored to help inform the design of future stores.

Technologies used include ground source heating and cooling, which coupled with the heat reclaimed from the refrigeration feeds the under floor heating system. Two bio-mass boilers provide heating for the hot water within the Store as well as providing top up heating for the under floor heating system during the winter months.

Materials used include a timber glulam structural frame, Thermowood heat treated timber cladding, reclaimed brickwork and recyclable aluminium standing seam roof, an area of which has been planted with sedum.

Passive design features include Kalwall translucent composite sandwich panels which diffuse light providing even glare free Illumination, low levels of heat transmission whilst having high thermal insulation values. There are also five north facing roof lights which admit glare free natural light onto the sales floor and Sun pipes which provide natural light to the customer restaurant where the room is a greater depth, to reduce the need for electric lighting.

This Store received a BREEAM rating of excellent and achieves an EPC certificate ‘A’ rating.
