Glazing Shading

View for

Aedas Computational Design and Research team created a tool to generate shading for windows in Abu Dhabi. The tool was applied to the scheme design for a residential plot, where the window sizes were chosen according to the golden ratio. For the project in question, the design guidelines included strict criteria for shading, glazing must be: 100% shaded on the 21st June at 3pm, at least 50% shaded on the 21st December at solar noon.

The team wrote an application to calculate the depth of window extrusions needed to satisfy these criteria for square and rectangular windows. The final application also takes into account overshadowing from surrounding buildings. To show the limitations of the criteria the application also calculates the extrusions that would be needed to completely shade glazing all day on the 21st of any month.
