Pennywell 360 Academy - Building Performance Evaluation (Academies)

View for

Pennywell 360 Academy is one of three academies that Aedas R&D has been commissioned by the Technology Strategy Board’s to study as part of the Building Performance Evaluation programme. The aim of the study will be looking to understand how educational buildings support learning excellence by comparing their performance, comfort and usability and seeing how they can improve and reduce their emissions in operation.

Case Study C
Pennywell Academy 360 is the most recent in the bid. The building located in Sunderland was procured through a Design and Build procurement process with sponsorship from a social housing provider as part of an estate regeneration project. It is a mixed mode building with localised mechanical extracts and operable windows in each classroom. Initially cross ventilation was targeted though free open areas were reduced and mechanical extracts introduced. The increased loads of the fans, through the operable areas and the lack of heat recovery are likely to affect electrical energy use as well as the quantity of Biomass usage. The academy is an active eco-school who are applying for their green flag award this year.
