Design by Search is a response to the first tender of the Khalifa-bin-Zayed Al Nehayan Foundation competition where a series of visual analogies to algorithmic patterns were invoked. The Computational Design and Research group divided the brief into three areas of applications: roof – circle packing + connectivity graph, elevations – barycentric coordinate systems for mesh population, residential units – polyomino tiling for 3D Tetris with evolutionary optimization.
What made this competition unique was the deliberate lack of foreseeing the final cladding, roof and residential patterns, which resulted from the design of algorithmic and heuristic search methods. All applications were bound to design specifications independently and therefore easily updated to changes in the constraint set.
