Rock Recursive Facade

View for

The Rock is a design for an office building in a high visibility location of a new Middle East development, undertaken by the Aedas London office. Site conditions were used to create a sculpted geometry that encourages the wind to accelerate around the base of the building, and to shade the urban garden below. It was important that the building envelope also responded to the extreme environment, without detracting from the design intentions of the form. A recursive subdivision pattern was created that responded to insolation analysis of the building façade. This created variation in the shading of the underlying glazing, to minimize internal heat gains while retaining external views.
