This modular shelving system, designed in collaboration with Massimo Mariani, is called Vita as a reference to the ‘Game of Life’ created by the mathematician John Conway in the late sixties. The Game of Life simulates the transformations of patterns over generations based on cellular configurations. The product was shortlisted for the 22nd ADI Compasso d’Oro Award and won an Honorary Mention for the same.
Vita consists of five shelving modules that can be configured according to the user’s requirements. To generate arrangements of modules, we developed an interactive online application allowing the user to playfully participate in the design process. The application algorithm is based on recursive branching – used to generate labyrinths – that can be observed in plants. To play for yourself, please visit www.mdfitalia.it.
